Imagine floating over a landscape in a hot air balloon. Tethered high above the ground you might make out an entire town at the masterplan scale. Come down a bit lower, you can make out individual buildings in architectural scale. Father down – close enough to peer into the window of a tall building you can observe interior scale. Beyond that – where you left the balloon and walked into the building…we’re at the intimate, functional scale – where the relationship to the individual human body apparent.
The town, the building, the interior spaces and the furniture are all designed using similar principles of design. These include integration of form and function, the selection of the right materials, and relying on appropriate methods of construction. Together they fuse artistic and pragmatic goals into a unitary solution.
Our furniture and objects are largely made of wood – constructed by traditional hand methods in our workshop. We source sustainable, commercially available species from reputable suppliers and make sure our craftsmen are paid fair wages and work in a safe environment.
The definition of furniture can be expanded to comprise an entire interior composition. Our 3,000sf office in Micronesia for Asian Development Bank allowed us to test this claim. Our studio designed and our workshops prefabricated the entire interior environment – including chairs, tables and cabinets, to be sure, but also every wall, door, ceiling panel, decorative objects, signage and light fixture. The result was a fully prefabricated, richly textured, human scaled, organic, biophilic solution that was successfully delivered to a remote island location for rapid installation.
