Interior Design stands apart from architecture in several ways. In most cases the need to respond to the building scale, structure, technology and form differ markedly between those related disciplines.
Architecture creates an overarching composition that comprises the entirety of the building’s immovable characteristics. From access and interior circulation, to structural divisions and ceiling heights, architecture creates the sandbox within which the interior designer plays.
The interior designer is traditionally concerned with the surface of things. Of colors and lighting, furniture placement and wall textures. Most interior designers therefore limit themselves to those kinds of issues. However, the reach and significance of interior design can become much more in the hands of a skilled professional who has mastery of the totality of the creative, technical and legal issues comprising architecture.
If the interior designer reaches beyond the traditional limitations of the profession and strives to understand complexities like the fire code and the exit requirements, which walls can be removed and which cannot, how to relocate electrical and plumbing components – a broader range of options for sculpting interior space becomes possible. Those skills can allow the molding of a rigid, rectangular space into a fluid, sensual environment that might be appropriate in a hotel or restaurant setting. Alternatively, that interior designer could combine spaces by removing non- structural walls, relocate utility systems and evolve an interior plan that is not in conflict with the existing structure. That is the kind of bold interior design we practice.
